Seniors Down Juniors In 2014 Powder Puff Football Game (10/05/14)

The Clarion Area Student Council hosted their annual Powder Puff Flag Football Game, on Wednesday, October 1, at the Clarion High School Football Field.  This event and Homecoming ticket sales are the only Student Council fundraising activities according to Business teacher, Miss Erika Bevevino, who along with Math and Science Teacher Nate Blachier are Student Council advisors.

The Juniors broke a scoreless tie at 2:34 of the first when quarterback Anna Reed hit speedster Kelly Beveridge down the right sideline for a 45 yard touchdown. Keanna Over followed with the two point conversion, giving the Juniors an 8-0 lead. But after Emily Powers had a great run, setting the Seniors up at the nine, it didn’t take the Seniors long to score. Maci Thorton ran the ball off tackle for a touchdown from the six, closing the gap to 8-6.

The Seniors took a 12-8 lead, with 6:42 left in the quarter, when quarterback Lauren Wiser hit a wide open Callie Freenock down the right sideline for a 31 yard touchdown.

In the third quarter, the Seniors, went old school and ran what looked like a flying wedge. But no! On an apparent form of trickery, Wiser left the wedge and ran around left end, before being stopped at the two. The Seniors increased the lead to 18-8, when Wiser again hit a wide open Freenock, with a touchdown in the left corner of the endzone, at 6:38.

The Juniors answered. Beveridge, with some nifty moves advanced the ball from her own twenty to the Senior forty-eight. Maddison Weaver then went around left end to the fifteen. Several plays later, Claire Saylor caught a pass from Reed for the touchdown, bringing the younger team to within four at 18-14, at with 43 seconds left in the stanza.

But with the clock winding down, in the third, Wiser hit Thornton with a touchdown pass, covering roughly 70 yards. Phaedra Hockman caught another Wiser pass, for the two point conversion and the Seniors led by ten once again, at 24-14.

Jenn Ochs had an interception for the Seniors early in the fourth. Shortly after, Thornton hit Brooke Allen for the touchdown and then threw to Powers, for the two-point conversion, giving them the biggest lead of the game at 32-14. The Juniors closed out the scoring on a long pass play, as Johnna Rapp connected with Reed for an 80 touchdown to set the final at 32-20.

Junior and Senior boys served as Coaches. The officials for the game were Dave Constantino and Devin Shumaker.

(Great job to both teams and to the Student Council!!!!)
