Bobcat Assistant Football Coach, Scott “Scooter” Miller Named To Lycoming College Hall Of Fame (01/25/15)

Lycoming College, in Williamsport, has announced the 2015 Induction Class to the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Among this year’s inductees is former Clarion Bobcat Football standout and current Bobcat Assistant Coach Scott “Scooter” Miller.Scooter and Family

After an outstanding high school career that saw him earn a Second Team All-Conference selection, at Wide Receiver, as a junior and a First Team selection, at Defensive Back, as a senior,  Miller went on to a stellar career at Lycoming.

Miller played for legendary Coach Frank Girardi, who had a 36 year career (1972-2007), as the Warriors’ Head Coach. Girardi, a member of the 2010 Hall of Fame Class, compiled an astounding 257-97-4 record at Lycoming. During Miller’s career, the team recorded a 29-10 record, winning two Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Titles (1991 and 1992) and making two NCAA Division III Tournament appearances.

A Defensive Back, Miller tied for the national lead in interceptions, as a junior in 1993, with nine. He earned a Second Team spot on the Associated Press Little All-America Team , as well as a Third Team nod on the Champion USA/ SID All-America Team.

After collecting six interceptions in his senior year of 1994, Miller was again named to the Third Team on Champion USA/SID All-America Team.

Miller is fourth in school history with 17 career interceptions and ninth all-time with 23 pass breakups. He was named to the All-MAC Team twice.

Miller also played under longtime Lycoming Assistant Coach Steve Wiser, who is a member of the 1989 Athletic Hall of Fame Class. Wiser, who has been the Warriors Defensive Coordinator since 1977, is Clarion Bobcat Head Coach Larry Wiser’s brother. Miller played under and is currently the Defensive Backs and Wide Receivers Coach under Coach Larry Wiser at Clarion Area. He teaches Science at Union High School.

Miller is married to the former Laura Soney who graduated from Lycoming in 1995. They have two sons, Brendan and Spencer, who are both student athletes at Clarion High School. Laura’s father, Joe Soney, also attended Lycoming, graduating in 1972.

Joining Miller in the Class of 2015 are: Andrea (Cooper) Tiedgen ’09 (women’s basketball), Chris Dahlheimer ’10 (wrestling), Matt Frey ’09 (men’s soccer), Deanna (Cappo) Kirn ’84 (women’s tennis), John Scanlon ’01 (football) and Matt Stackhouse ’04 (men’s basketball).

The induction ceremony will be held at 2:00p.m. on Saturday, May 16th, in the Jane Schultz Room of the Wertz Student Union Center, with a reception following the ceremony in Burchfield Lounge.

Miller had this to say about his selection to the Hall of Fame, “It’s an honor to be selected and join the ranks of some of the best athletes that have competed at Lycoming. It’s neat to be rewarded for the dedication and hard work put in back in my high school and college days.”

About his playing days for the Bobcats and Warriors, Miller said, “My greatest memories for both Clarion Area and Lycoming are about the camaraderie of the guys I played ball with, as opposed to individual plays. I developed lasting friendships which I don’t think would have been as strong without the experiences we shared together in football.”

Concerning his family Miller said, “I have a good time coaching and supporting the boys as much as I can. Laura is a trouper having to put up with all guys in the household. Both of my parents are deceased. Laura’s parents, Joe and Jayne Soney enjoy watching and following the boys sporting events.”

About his dual duties at Union and Clarion, he said, “I enjoy teaching at Union. We have a dedicated staff that works well together. It’s a good bunch of kids at Union. The football players accept it pretty well, that I coach at Clarion. They talk to me during the week of the Clarion-Union match-up but not really at the game.”

Miller expressed his thanks to a number of folks, saying, “I would like to thank my former teachers and coaches that helped prepare me to get to college. Thanks to all my teammates in both high school and college. I had many of my friends’ parents that supported me along with my mom growing up. There was quite a net that looked out for me I think. Steve Wiser was one of the few coaches that recruited me and Larry helped a lot with that recruitment. I wouldn’t have chosen Lycoming without those two. It was quite an experience, being coached by two Wisers, by the way.”
