Seniors Win Annual Powder Puff Flag Football Game (10/18/15)

The Annual Clarion Area High School Powder Puff Flag Football Game was held last Wednesday (October 14th), at the High School Football Field, on a muddy turf.

The game was an action packed, fun event as usual, with the Senior girls taking on their Junior counterparts. Bobcat Varsity boys players served as coaches for each squad and Mr. Constantino provided the officiating for the contest. Mrs. Cathcart coordinated the evening’s activities.

Excellent play-by-play was provided by Zach Sintobin, with assistance from able spotters Prince Brooks and Noah Piper. The clock was run by Mrs. Cathcart, Nate Blacier, MacKenzie DiTullio and Nick Cherico.

The game, which was played with ten-minute quarters, under a running clock, with touchdowns being worth seven points (no PATs or conversions), began by looking as if it would be a low scoring defensive struggle. The first quarter went by with neither team crossing the goal line.

That all changed, with the seniors scoring two touchdowns early in the second quarter. The first came at 8:07, with Anna Reed hitting Kelly Beveridge on a fifteen yard scoring strike, to make the score 7-0, seniors. (Both girls would have big nights for the seniors.) Just twelve seconds later, at 7:55, with Anna intercepting a pass and took it down the left sideline for twenty yards and a score. The Seniors took the 14-0 lead into halftime.

The Crowning Ceremony for the2015 Homecoming Penny King took place at halftime. In a nice touch, the “Court” members were escorted across the field by their mothers and stand-ins for those whose mothers couldn’t attend. The members included Zack Huet (not in attendance), Brendan Miller, Michael Bartley, Caleb Bailey, Luke Nellis, Alexander Burkhart, Adrian Weber and Will Staub.

The Senior Girls crowned Alexander as this year’s king and presented all the “Court” members with much needed supplies of candy.

The Seniors continued their scoring parade, as Keanna Over intercepted a pass and returned it 25 yards to paydirt, on the first play of the second half, upping the lead to 21-0. Johnna Rapp intercepted a pass on the very next play, to set up a run by twenty-five yard touchdown run by Kelly. The Senior lead was now 28-0.

Claire Saylor thwarted the next Junior possession, by recovering a fumble, which set up the next score. At roughly 3:35 of the third quarter. Anna hit Keanna with a touchdown pass of about thirty yards, to move the score to 35-0.

The Juniors refused to be held off the scoreboard, though. And with about one minute left in the third quarter, they used a little razzle-dazzle. Chelsea Mason handed off to Gloria Kroh. Gloria then throug a twenty-five yard scoring strike to Zoe Shaffer, and the shutout was averted, with the score Seniors 35 – Juniors 7, after three.

The Seniors would score twice more before game’s end. With 3:00 on the clock, Anna ran a keeper down the right side for a fifteen yard touchdown, moving the score to 42-7. Anna hit Kelly with a fifteen yard scoring strike, in which Kelly had a nice spin move, to set the final at 49-7.

Both Teams, as well as the fans, seemed to really enjoy this year’s games. Mrs. Cathcart is to be commended on the fine event this year and every year.
