Nellis and Clarion Area were given the Gold Award from the National High School Sports Publication Awards (NHSSPA), for her book “Clarion Football – One Team – One Goal.”  The book is a full color, hardcover, pictorial review of the Bobcat varsity football team’s 2011 season, and features photos by Nellis, who also photographs other Clarion Area sports teams, Gary Wiant and Brenda Armstrong.  Articles from several area sportswriters interspersed with life lesson and football related quotes from Vince Lombardi, to Disraeli, to “unknown” are used for the text. The schedule and roster are also included within the book’s pages.

The award, in the public school, 0-500 enrollment – student prepared category, is one of two that Clarion Area received this year. Also being recognized was the Clarion Area High School Football – History and Records Digest, which received the Silver Award in the public school, 0-500 enrollment – parents /supporters/fans prepared category.

Another area publication also was a winner this year. Rich Rhoades  and Brookville Area H.S. won the Gold Award in the public school, 501-999 enrollment, alumni prepared category, for “Brookville Wrestling 50th Anniversary” book. Rich is the Sports Editor for The Jeffersonian Democrat.

The NHSSPA competition’s purpose is to recognize excellence in the preparation of high school athletic media guides and athletic programs, produced each year, across the country.
