CLARION 3 – CRANBERRY 0 (10 INNINGS)

Coach Jewett shared this account of his team’s game with Cranberry: An instant classic! 0-0 into the 10th inning. Max Lane and (Cranberry’s) Dylan Cyphert lived up to the hype of a true pitchers duel.

Cyphert set a school record with 19 strike outs. Each pitcher let up only 2 hits over 8 innings of work.

Both teams had some opportunities throughout the game but could not come up with the clutch hit.

Clarion finally broke through in the top of the 10th. Nellis reached on an error to lead off. He then almost got picked off but returned safely to first after a short rundown. Smith drew a walk from Zerbe. Then Nellis and Smith ran a safe double steal, while Wilson tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt. After a strike out, Spencer Miller smacked a single up the middle to score Nellis for the game’s first run.

Miller then stole second base. Max Lane stepped to the plate, with 2 outs and men on second and third. He sent a ground ball past the third baseman to score both Smith and Miller for 2 very important insurance runs.

Miller threw the final 2 innings in the game. He worked out of a jam in the 9th, with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. He got the next two batters to fly out.

In the bottom of the tenth, Miller got the leadoff man to ground out right back to the pitcher. Cyphert then hit a single. Miller then got the next two batters to fly out to centerfield to end the game.

(For his effort, Lane was named the Bobcats Player of the Game by Coach Jewett.)
