Three Bobcats Headed To Shippensburg For State Track And Field Championships (05/16/15)

Clarion Area High School seniors, Ian Corbett, Liam Raehsler and Jenn Ochs will all be making return trips to the PIAA State Track and Field Championships.

The Meet will be held  at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium, next weekend, Friday and Saturday, May 22nd and 23rd. The trio advance by virtue of their performances in yesterday’s (Friday, May 15th) District Nine Class-A Championships at Kane Area High School.

Corbett earned the James Manners Award as the Boys’MVP, at the District Nine Meet, after winning the long jump (20-10), finishing in a tie with Karns City’s Logan Moroney, in the 100 with a time of 11.06 and finishing third in the 200 at 23.66. He ran a 10.98 in the 100 prelims. The Girls’ James Manners Award winner was Nicole Florio, from Elk County Catholic, who won the high jump, and 400, took fifth place in the 200 and was a member of the first place 4×400 relay.

This is Corbett’s third straight year winning the long jump and 100. He finished fifth in the 100, in last year’s State Meet.

Raehsler was a double winner, taking the 1600, running a 4:27.50 and the 3200 where his time was 9:52.77. This was Raehsler’s second year in a row to win the 3200, to advance to Shippensburg.

Ochs finished third in the javelin and advanced to the State Meet, with a qualifying throw of 123 feet. She finished fourth at Districts last year and also advanced by reaching the qualifying standard.

Five other Clarion athletes reached the District Nine Medals Platform; the top six in each event earn medals. Josh Kriebel ran a 15.90 in the 100 hurdles, just missing States, with a third place finish. Zach Hill finished in fourth place in the high jump, with a leap of 5-10. Ethan Straffin tossed the javelin 151-8, for a fifth place finish.

Two Lady Cats earned fifth place medals, Julie Kenneson in the high jump, with a leap of 4-8 and Forest Mills in the 800, with a time of 2:32.06. Mills also ran the 400, where she finished in tenth place, with a time of 1:06.57.

Adam Bettwy finished in eighth place in the 1600, running a 4:56.23. Gabby Weaver was timed in 52.71 in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 10th place. Gloria Kroh had a leap of 29-10.5, for a thirteenth place finish, in the  triple jump. Matt Wagner ran 12.08 in the 100 for fifteenth place. Also competing for the Cats was Katie Eustice, in the high jump.

The 4×100 relay finished second but was disqualified for a uniform infraction.

Twenty-three teams competed in this year’s District Nine Class-AA Meet. The Bobcats finished fourth in the Boys’ Meet and the Lady Cats finished fifteenth.
