Clarion Downs North Clarion 6-2 In District Quarterfinal (05/29/17)

(By CSZ sportswriter Kenn Staub)

Clarion senior pitcher Reed Anthony limited North Clarion to a single hit while the Bobcats banged out 9 of their own in downing the Wolves 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the District 9/10 Class A playoffs.  Not only does Clarion now advance to the semifinals where they will face the Jamestown Muskies out of District 10, but the victory in Punxsutawney on Friday also served to avenge one of the two loses the Bobcats suffered during the regular season.

Clarion, the home team by virtue of being the top seed in district play, took an early lead, scoring a single run in the first and then 2 in the second.  The Wolves scored 2 runs of their own in the top of the third, turning it into a tight 3-2 game going to the fourth frame.  It was all Clarion after that, however, as the Bobcats added 2 in the fourth and another in the sixth to win 6-2.

Senior Ryan Anthony (3-4), junior Spencer Miller (3-3), and freshman Nate Datko (2-3) all had multiple singles for Clarion, with senior  Kyle Patterson (1-2) contributing one.  Miller led the team with 3 RBI and Datko chipped in another.  Reed Anthony went the distance on the mound, allowing only a single hit in his 7 innings of work.

Clarion (17-2) will next face Jamestown (4-9), who defeated Kennedy Catholic 15-0 in 5 innings on Saturday.  The District 9/10 Class A semifinal contest is scheduled for Tuesday, May 30 at 4:30 in Cranberry (Seneca).
