Four Area Youth Wrestlers Headed To States (03/19/18)

Four Area Youth Wrestlers are headed to the 2018 PJW (Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling) State Youth Wrestling Tournament held in Wilkes-Barre, PA this weekend (March 23rd & 24th).

They qualified this past weekend at the Area V Championships which were held at Clearfield High School. To qualify for the State Tournament, a wrestler must finish in the top two in their age and weight bracket from their Area.

Area V consists of schools from Bradford, Smethport, Port Alleghany, Osweyo Valley, Coudersport, St. Marys, Kane, Johnsonburg, Ridgway, Brockway, Dubois, West Branch, Curwensville, Clearfield, Punxsy, Marion Center, Redbank, Keystone, Brookville, Cameron County, and Clarion.

Dawson Smail, 6th grade (Clarion Elementary), qualified in the 12U 135 lb. weight class. This is Dawson’s first trip to compete at the State Wrestling Tournament and the son of David and Jami Smail of Shippenville.

Derek Smail, 5th grade (Clarion Elementary), qualified in the 10U 150 lb. weight class as Area V Champion. Derek is a 3-time Area V Champion, 4-time State Qualifier and the son of David and Jami Smail of Shippenville.

Mason Gourley, 5th grade (Clarion Elementary), qualified in the 10U 95 lb. weight class as Area V Champion. Mason is a 2-time State Qualifier and the son of Braun and Holly Gourley of Clarion.

Hayden Hindman, 4th grade (Clarion Elementary), qualified in the 10U 105 lb. weigh class. This is Hayden’s first trip to compete at the State Wrestling Tournament and is the son of Mike and Kristen Hindman of Clarion.
