Clarion Area had ten wrestlers in this weekend’s (Friday and Saturday, February 24th and 25th) District Nine Class-AA Wrestling Tournament at PennWest Clarion’s Tippin Gymnasium.

Two Bobcats, Mason Gourley and Logan Powell earned the right to compete in next weekend’s (Friday and Saturday March 2nd and 3rd) PIAA Northwest Regional Class-AA Tournament, at Sharon High School, with Mason finishing second at 152 and Logan finishing fourth at 114.

Mason opened competition with a 15-0 technical fall over Jordan Smith of Redbank Valley, in the quarterfinals. He followed that with a 3-1 decision over St. Marys’ Andrew Wolfganger in the semifinals. He fell 3-1, in the first place match, to Reece Bechakas from Kane.

Clarion Area Head Coach Lee Weber had this to say about Mason, “Mason had some close takedowns in the finals but couldn’t finish his singles. He had a deep single late into his match but his opponent was able to counter for a merkle in the last few seconds for a 3-1 score.”

Logan Powell (on left) 114LB 4th Place Winner.

Logan started out with a 6-0 decision over Alex McLaughlin from Cranberry in the quarterfinals. He fell to St. Marys’ Aiden Beimel in the semis, but came back in the consolation semifinals with 6-4 decision over Ian O’Shea from Port Allegany. Logan lost a 7-4 decision to Bryndin Chamberlain in the third place match.

Coach Weber said, “Logan lost a couple of close decisions (3-0, 7-4) to finish in 4th.

“They both (Mason and Logan) need to finish in the top 4 at Regionals next week to advance to the Stare tourney in Hershey!”

Logan Edmonds, finished in sixth place at 215.

Coach Weber shared, “Logan Edmonds finished in 6th place. He has a shoulder injury but gutted through to finish a strong career at Clarion! He always gave his all in his matches!”

Also competing for the Bobcats at districts were: Grayson Aaron (121), Seth Weckerly (127), Brendon Wright (133), Jacob Henry (145), Jacob Naser (0-2), Mat Alston (172) and Gavin Hannold (189).

Coach Weber said, “All others are coming back and showed improvements by wrestling closer to opponents that had beaten them earlier in the year!”

The Bobcats finished eleventh in the sixteen team field. The Top Five Teams were 1) Clearfield, 2) St. Marys, 3) Cranberry, 4) Brookville and 5) Brockway.
