Clarion Area’s Gary Matus and his parents Joe and Rachel Matus were honored during the Bobcat baseball team’s 2023 Senior Day Festivities, prior to their home game against the Forest Area Fires on Monday, May 15th at Clarion County Park.

As Clarion’s only senior, this was a “pretty exclusive club” for Gary, as his teammates, coaches and fans recognized him for his outstanding four year Bobcat career (The team get didn’t play in his freshman year in 2020 due to Covid restrictions).

Gary, who pitches and plays outfield, really made this a day to remember, as he was the winning pitcher, working all three innings in a 19-1 (three innings) win, going the distance, giving up just one hit, while striking out three and walking three, and a solid day on offense, driving in two runs and scoring once.

Coach Jewett Introducing Gary and his parents, and sharing his thoughts on his Senior honoree

Bobcats Head Coach Rob Jewett had this to say, “Gary has been a big part of the team this year, being the only senior.  He has brought tremendous leadership being one of the captains of a pretty young team.   He has a great work ethic and attitude that carries on to his other teammates.  Gary starts in the outfield for us and has created a “No Fly Zone” with his other fellow outfielders.  They take great pride in playing exceptional outfield and that comes from Gary’s personality.

“He is a great person on and off the field.  He was involved in more that just baseball as he was a lead role in the schools musical this year, excelled in golf,  and is continuing his band talents with the IUP marching band.  Gary is a wonderful person to be around.

“It was a pleasure coaching him and seeing him grow on the field and with his team.

“I will surely miss his energy and humor, but I know he will do great things in his future!

(Congratulations to Gary and his parents!!!! Thanks to Nate Girvan for his photos!!)
