The Central Clarion Wildcats Boys Soccer team traveled to Brockway on Wednesday, September 18th for a late 7PM game against the Rovers at Varischetti Field. The Wildcats were still smarting from a loss to the Rovers on home turf by a heartbreaking score of 1-2.
Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the Wildcats offense reemerged stronger, faster and smarter shutting out the Rovers 8-0.
Captain Thomas Uckert, a midfielder, scored 4 goals and striker Martin Ormeno chalked up a hat trick. Midfielder Wyatt Boyden worked relentlessly and scored a single goal.
The difference during this game versus the home loss to Brockway was the vast array of passing by the Wildcats, flummoxing the Rover defense. To prove the theory, the plethora of different assists belong to 7 different Wildcats. Boyden recorded two assists. Single assists belong to four midfielders consisting of Quinn O’Neil, Dany Schweitzer, Nathan Frederick and Brenden Bettwy. But defenders also were single assist recipients, with Brady Pierce and Ky Clark joining the action of not only defending goalie Isaac Lerch but making assists on goals.
The score doesn’t reflect the amount of effort the defense needed to exert to keep the score sheet clean for the shutout. Defenders Chris Kim, Mason Gourley, Jason Megnin, Carter Brown and Brady Pierce had to continually work to keep the ball out to of the Wildcats’ end of the field.
Numerous penalties were called both ways as the stout Wildcat defense had to match the predictable physicality of Rover’s style of offense. Although no yellow cards were delivered, many wondered during several kerfluffles if one would appear.
Lerch made 8 saves on goal in the first half and 7 saves in the last half of the game.
The Wildcats again have back to back games with a game on Thursday at home against the North Clarion Wolves at 5PM. Much like the Wildcats sought redemption against Brockway, the Wolves will be seeking the same retribution after their loss to the Wildcats earlier in the season by a score of 6-0. With half of the regular season officially over, the Wildcats still have many difficult contests to see if their skills they’ve been honing over their young lives will take them through a playoff run.
(Way to go, Wildcats!!!! Thanks to Matt Lerch for this article and photos!!)
