Central Clarion Outlasts Redbank Valley On The Pitch
(By Mark Bettwy)
The Redbank Valley Bulldog boys’ soccer team fell to the Central Clarion Wildcats on the road in the late game last evening (Tuesday, August 27th) at Clarion-Limestone high school.
Central Clarion fans celebrated early on a header goal by Quinn O’Neil but that tally was negated by a handball violation, keeping the slate clean in what became an evenly matched game. With just over four minutes remaining in the first half, O’Neil connected on a thru ball to Wyatt Watterson who got past the defense on the wing. Dany Schweitzer picked up Watterson’s centering pass from a deflection and broke the tie with a chip shot into the wide-open goal. The score remained 1-0 at the break.
Shortly into the second half, Schweitzer found a streaking Martin Ormeno who added to the score with a twenty-yard bomb past the diving Bulldog goalie.
Redbank found their groove and nearly scored with just over seventeen minutes to go but sophomore goalie, Tyler Brown, stopped the two-yard shot with a one hand diving save. That was the first of several key saves Brown would make, earning him the Player of the Game award. This is Brown’s first season as the starting tender for Coach Don Montgomery’s club.
Kylan Clark and Chris Kim anchored the Wildcat defense throughout, helping to shut down a flurry of attempts from five consecutive corner kicks with twenty-one minutes remaining.
Redbank narrowed the scoring gap with a point-blank stabbing shot over the head of goalie Sampson Gao. They continued to pour-on the pressure for the remaining seventeen minutes with several near misses threatening the lead. None found the mark though and the score remained 2-1 as time ran out.
The next action happens in conference games on Thursday, August 28th when the Wildcats travel to Keystone and Redbank hosts Karns City.
(Way to go, Wildcats!!!! Thanks to Mark Bettwy for this Article!!)
