On February 20, 2026, Clarion County Special Olympics held its inaugural Polar Plunge. The Polar Plunge is a signature fundraising event sponsored annually by Special Olympics chapters across the country. This event raises essential funds to support athletes nationwide while also increasing visibility and providing opportunities to engage communities about how Special Olympics benefits youth and adults with intellectual disabilities and autism.

The Clarion County program has experienced significant growth over the past several years following a complete shutdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, athletes in Clarion County compete in basketball, bowling, powerlifting, volleyball, and golf. The program is also exploring the addition of a recreational bocce team to expand opportunities for participation.

All training, uniforms, equipment, and competition expenses are provided at no cost to athletes. The program operates entirely through the dedication of volunteers who give their time and talents to ensure athletes have meaningful and inclusive experiences.

With tremendous support from PennWest University (Clarion), Clarion Volunteer Fire Department, and Clarion Hospital EMS, this year’s Polar Plunge was a great success. The event raised just under $12,000 and welcomed 70 brave plungers.

Local businesses and school districts throughout the county were invited to participate in the plunge or become event sponsors, with several districts planning additional activities on their campuses. The Redbank Valley Unified Bocce Team also made the trip to Clarion to take the plunge in support of the cause.

The success of this inaugural event reflects the strength of community partnerships and the continued commitment to providing opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to train, compete, and thrive.
