Lady Cats Varsity Basketball Team Downs North Clarion 48-47 (02/11/15)

After downing North Clarion, 54-19, on Saturday (February 7th), the Clarion Area Lady Cats had to face them again on Monday (February 9th).

This time around the Lady Wolves proved to be a much more formidable opponent, as the Lady Cats eked out a 48-47 win.

Clarion jumped out to a 13-10 lead, after one period, with Anna Reed and Maci Thornton each contributing five points. Also scoring in the quarter, was Nicki Glenn, who hit a three-pointer.

The Lady Cats went on a 17-6 run, in the second, taking a 30-16 lead and looked like they would put the game away early. Thornton had 7 points during the run, which ended with a trey by Kelly Beveridge but the Lady Wolves scored five points to end the frame, closing the gap to 30-21 at the half.

The Wolves closed the gap to 30-24, at the start of the third. Glenn’s second three-pointer moved Clarion’s lead to 33-24, but seven straight NC points made it a one point game, at 33-31. The third ended with Clarion leading 39-35.

Glenn’s third trey of the night, in the fourth gave the Cats an eight-point, 46-38 lead, in the fourth, but two free-throws and a three-pointer, by North Clarion’s Tori Obenrader, cut the Lady Cats’ lead to 46-43, with 1:43 left. A turn around jumper by Thornton gave the Cats a 48-43 lead.

Abbie Schmader’s bucket for NC closed the score to 48-45. The Wolves had the ball at the end of the game and Michaela Higgins hit a buzzer beater, but only a two-pointer and the Cats came away from the nail-biter with the one point win.

Clarion was led by Thornton’s 21 points, which included two treys. She was followed by Glenn, who had an outstanding night all-around, with thirteen points. Reed scored nine points. Beveridge had 3 points and Kenneson had two.

Schmader had 17 and Obenrader had fourteen to lead North Clarion.

The Lady Cats are scheduled to host Punxsutawney today (Wednesday, February 11th).
