Though the turnout was a little bit lacking, the four competitors still managed to put on high level performances and keep spectators entertained. “It’s not the quantity it’s the quality and we definitely had great lifters here today” stated Brad Wagner, the meet supervisor.

The tournament consisted of two events: bench press and deadlift. James Kerle, a junior at Keystone High School swept all events, benching 270 lb and deadlifting 450 lb in the 181 lb weight class. Wyatt Hetrick, Redbank Valley Junior, took second in the bench press by lifting 240 lb in the 165 lb weight class.

Lewis Armstrong, a student at Edinboro University, took second in the deadlift by raising 425 lb in the 181 lb weight class. John Tibbs, Redbank Valley Sophomore also competed and placed third in the bench press by lifting 225 lb in the 148 lb weight class.

The boys also received instruction and helpful tips from multiple locals who have a large amount of powerlifting experience.

Overall, the event was a success for those competing and those spectating. It was a great opportunity for the these young boys to show the payoff of their hard work in the gym.

(Thanks to Emily Powers for this excellent article and photos!!! Congratulations to Nick a successful meet. You both did a great job!!!! And congratulations to the lifters!!!!)

Editor’s notes – Nick is the son of Dave and Melissa Shoemaker. Melissa is a teacher at Clarion Area. Emily Powers is a student athlete at Clarion Area.

Clarion Elementary principal, Brad Wagner enlisted his crew of judges and spotters to help with this meet: Wayne Best, Jason Best, Nate McClaine, Cody Dolby and yours truly.

Also doing a fine job helping with this meet were Coach Carillo and a the folks at Redbank Valley.

Coach Carillo has brought a fine lifting contingent to our Clarion Area meets over the years. Nick has been a part of that contingent. I’m sure I speak for the whole Clarion crew, in saying, “It was great to return the favor by being able to help with this tournament.”
