Bobcat Baseball Team Goes Three and Two Last Week (05/10/15)

The Clarion Area Varsity Baseball Team went 3 and 2, last week. They opened the week with a 15-2 win over host Venango Catholic Vikings, at Oil City, on Monday (May 4th) and followed up on that win, by downing the visiting A-C Valley Falcons, 8-3, on Senior Day, Tuesday (May 5th) at Clarion County Park.

On Wednesday (May 6th) the Cats lost a one-run, 2-1 game to the visiting Cranberry Berries. Then on Thursday (May 7th) the Bobcats split a double header with homestanding Clarion-Limestone, at Strattanville. The Lions won the first game, 5-4, while the Bobcats took the nightcap 15-0.

After last week’s action, the Cats’ season record stands at 10-3.

VENANGO CATHOLIC

The Bobcats opened the game scoring four runs in the top of the first. The Vikings answered with two of their own, in the bottom of the inning to make the score 4-2. The Cats scored seven in the second, one in the third and three more in the fourth, for the 15-2 win, as they collected 16 hits, including five doubles.

Thomas Plummer, who was named the Cats’ Player of the Game, had two hits, including a double, while driving in 4 runs and scoring once. Reed Anthony also had a single and a double, with an RBI and a run scored. Max Lane had a double, with 3 RBIs and two runs scored. Adrian Weber had a single and a double and scored twice.

Leo Aiello had a single, drove in 2 runs and scored once, Derek Lauer had a singlek drove in a run and scored twice. Spencer Miller had two hits and scored twice. Caleb Wilson had a single, an RBI and a run scored. Ryan Anthony had a hit and scored once, Luke Nellis had a double and Kyle Patterson had a single.

Weber picked up the win, going three innings, striking out 7, while giving up 2 runs on three hits. Lauer pitched two innings, striking out two and allowing one hit.

A-C VALLEY  (SENIOR NIGHT)

The Cats scored 5 runs in the third and three in the sixth. The Falcons scored 1 in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Coach Rob Jewett named Taylor Smith the Bobcats’ player of the Game. Smith pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just 4 hits. He struck out three. He also scored a run.

Max Lane had a single and a double, scored once and drove in a run. Adrian Weber and Thomas Plummer each had two hits. Weber scored once and had two RBIs. Plummer scored once. Spencer Miller had a single, 2 RBIs and scored a run.

Caleb Wilson singled, scored a run and drove in a run. Luke Nellis and Reed Anthony each singled and scored. Plummer, Cameron Craig and Anthony also shared the pitching duties. Anthony threw two strikeouts, while Craig and Plummer each fanned one batter.

Coach Jewett said this about his seniors: “Max Lane started varsity all 4 years. He plans on continuing his baseball at Carleton College in Minnesota. Thomas Plummer has started varsity the last 2 years. He has developed into an outstanding center fielder and has improved tremendously at the plate being our clean-up hitter. Derek Lauer has started varsity for 2 years. He is a true utility player. I can stick him anywhere in the field or lineup and have no worries at all. Brady Raybuck has played 4 years but this is his first year starting. He does a really good job in the field. …He has been contributing with his defense turning 4 double plays so far this year.”

CRANBERRY

This was a match-up between Max Lane and the Berries’ Dylan Cyphert, who had an epic duel several games back, which the Bobcats won in ten innings. 

Coach Jewett had this to say about this repeat match-up: “Another amazing game with these two teams. Lane vs. Cyphert round 2.”

Cyphert won this one.

Coach Jewett mentioned, “Clarion got on the board early with 1 run in the bottom of the first. Each pitcher then silenced the bats for the next 4 innings.”

Cranberry scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead. Cyphert did the rest as he shut the Bobcats down, retiring the last six batters in order to secure the win.

Coach Jewett named Lane the Bobcats’ Player of the Game, saying, “Max threw another gem and battled against the leagues best pitcher. He went the distance allowing 5 hits, 2 runs, 0 earned runs, 1 walk and 7 strike outs.” Lane was named the Bobcats’ Player of the Game.

Andrew Weber had a hit and scored the Cats’ lone run. Thomas Plummer had two hits and Derek Lauer had a single.

CLARION-LIMESTONE (GAME ONE)

The Lions opened the game scoring a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. The bobcats answered with a run in the top of the fourth and the Lions scored a single run in the bottom of the inning. The Cats closed the scoring out with three in the fifth, but it wasn’t enough as the C-L won 5-4.

Thomas Plummer, Spencer Miller, Caleb Wilson and Leo Aiello each had two hits, with one of Miller’s being a double. Plummer scored twice. Wilson scored once. Aiello drove in a run. Adrian Weber had a single, drove in a run and scored the Bobcats’ other run.

Ryan Anthony had a double and Derek Lauer contributed a single. Weber, Cameron Craig and Reed Anthony shared the pitching duties for the Bobcats. Reed Anthony was named the Bobcats’ Player of the Game. He struck out three and allowed no hits and no runs in the final two innings.

CLARION-LIMESTONE (GAME TWO)

Game two was a different story, as the Bobcats scored a run in the first, eight in the second and six in the third, while Reed Anthony held the Lions scoreless, in the 15-0 win.

Reed Anthony threw 5 strikeouts and allowed three hits.

The Cats had seven hits in the game.Derek Lauer has the big gun at the plate, going 2-for-2, with 4 RBIs and two runs scored. Leo Aiello had a single. He drove in three runs and scored once. Caleb Wilson had a single, an RBI and scored three times.

Thomas Plummer singled, scored twice and drove in a run. Kyle Patterson had a hit, an RBI and scored once. Cameron Craig had a single and an RBI. Adrian Weber scored 3 times and drove in a run. Max Lane had an RBI and scored two runs. Reed Anthony scored once.
