Softball: Maya Thornton Homer Lifts Lady Cats To Opening Round Win In District Playoffs (05/24/16)

The Clarion Area Lady Cats Softball Team opened the 2016 District Nine Class A playoffs with an exciting, come from behind, 3-2win over the visiting Curwensville Golden Tide, at Paul A. Weaver Park on Monday (May 23rd).

The game was scoreless after three innings, before the Tide struck for two runs in the top of the fourth. Clarion scored their first run in the fifth inning, with Johnna Rapp getting the RBI, cutting Curwensville’s lead in half, 2-1.

Cora Zerfoss led off the Clarion sixth with a single, and then came all the way around on a sacrifice bunt, knotting the game at 2-2. Then Maya Thornton launched a drive over the fence in left field, for a solo home run, that proved to be the game winner, as the Bobcats held the Tide off the board in the seventh.

Clarion had seven hits in the game. Anna Reed had two doubles. Zerfoss had two hits. Alexis Constantino and Carly Best each had singles.

Sadie Rudesyle was the winning pitcher.

The Lady Cats are now 14-7, and advance to the Semifinals, against Coudersport, at 3:30PM tomorrow (Wednesday, May 24th), at Benzinger Park in St. Marys.
