Soccer Review Clarion Area Girls, Clarion-Limestone Boys Both Pick Up Two Wins; Boys Seal Playoff Berth (10/15/16)

The Clarion Area Girls Soccer Team and the Clarion-Limestone Boys Soccer Teams have both recorded two wins this week. Coaches Schonbachler and Painter share summaries of the contests:

CLARION AREA GIRLS – COACH CHRIS SCHONBACHLER

Clarion vs Keystone

After a week off from game action, the Clarion Area Lady Cats visited Keystone on Tuesday evening (October 11th).

Lauren Troutman launched a cross over the Keystone defense, which found Alexa Kriebel. Kriebel’s quick strike gave Clarion a 1-0 advantage 37 seconds into the game. The Lady Panthers responded well, playing several passes through to Abby Caulfield who kept the Clarion defense on their toes all night.

Forest Mills struck next for Clarion with her first of three goals on the night. Her goals came courtesy of assists from Hannah Phillips, Courtney Schonbachler, and Lindsey Kemmer.

Forest also notched an assist on a goal scored late in the game by Megan Stahlman. The goal was Stahlman’s first of the season. Mills’ second hat trick of the season gives her a team leading 19 goals this season.

Clarion vs West Forest

The Clarion Area Lady Cat soccer team hosted the West Forest Lady Fires on Thursday evening. In a hard fought game, scoring chances were limited for both teams through the first half. Clarion took a 1-0 lead when off a corner kick, the ball deflected off a West Forest defender resulting in an own goal.

The Lady Fires struck back midway through the second half on a goal by Allison Carl. The game was tied at the end of regulation. As overtime started, the Lady Cats stepped up their level of play and maintained the majority of ball possession. This elevated effort soon resulted in a Natalie Glenn pass finding Forest Mills to the right side of the Lady Fires goal, Mills laced a perfect shot to the far left post which trickled into the net.

Final score Clarion 2 – West Forest 1.

The Lady Cat defensive squad comprised of Hannah Phillips, Gabby Weaver, Rachel Grabiak, Megan Stahlman, and Lindsey Kemmer also put forth a strong performance throughout the night, neutralizing countless West Forest attacks. Thursday’s win gives the Lady Cats a record of 9-6-1 this season.

The girls will complete their regular season schedule with their Senior Night game on Tuesday, October 19th when they host Kane.

CLARION-LIMESTONE BOYS – COACH NICOLE PAINTER

C-L vs Redbank Valley

The Clarion-Limestone Lions put in a dominating performance against the Redbank Valley Bulldogs on Tuesday, October 11th. The Lions came out and controlled the game from start to finish.

In the first half, the Lions struggled to connect on a few passes, but were still able to capitalize on 3 scoring opportunities while holding the Bulldogs scoreless. Blake Phillips would score for the Lions off an assist by Ty Blake and Braden Peters would score twice for the Lions with both goals being unassisted.

The Lions would continue to gain momentum in the second half. Braden Peters would go on to score two more goals with assists from Donovan Montgomery and Marshall Powers. Blake Phillips would also score two more times. Those goals would come from assists by Ty Blake and Donovan Montgomery. Lucas Baker scored a goal off an assist by Kyle Schonbachler and the final goal for the Lions would come from Kent Peterson off an assist by Leon Aristeguieta.

The Bulldogs would manage to make it on the board with a goal by Corben Beamer off an assist by Colby Nolf.

Both Peters and Phillips would record hat tricks for the Lions.

The game ended with a final score of C-L 9 Redbank 1.

C-L vs Forest Area

The C-L Lions would seal there playoff bid with a big win against the Forest Fires on Thursday, Oct. 13th. The Lions were able to put together another great performance to guarantee themselves a spot at playoffs.

The first half would start off very evenly matched with both teams battling hard. Great pressure by the Lions offense would lead to Forest putting in an own goal. This would remain the only goal of the first half. The Lions would build upon this momentum to control the second half with two more goals by Braden Peters off assists by Kyle Schonbachler and Donovan Montgomery.

The Lions defense continued to hold Forest scoreless resulting in a 3-0 victory for the Lions.
