Bobcat Thinclads Split With Wolves (05/03/19)

(By Coach Rosary Pennington)

Clarion Area split the wins today at North Clarion. Boys brought home a win 98-52. They had a great day on the track and in the field.

There were two additional district qualifiers today,  Clay McElravy in discus, with a throw of 121 feet and Noah Schill in the 1600, crossing the line at 4:50.4. We had solid performances for our boys and some newcomers stepped up their game today including Cody Hofius in the hurdles, running a personal best of 48.1 and taking first in the 300’s and Gavin Hoover in the 3200 with a personal best 11:59.1. Gavin worked together with teammate Jacob Smith who had the win in the 3200 (11:58.7).

The two boys relays 4X800 (11:26.3) and 4X400 (3:59.8) continue to condition in this relay and other events to gear up for districts. Both relays include Nick and Noah Schill and Don Cunningham; the difference is Dan Ketner in the 4X8 and Josh Mitchell in the 4X4.

(Cunningham won the 400 in 57.0 and was second in the 1600 and was third in the 800. Nick Schill won the 800 in 2:11.0. Josh Mitchell took seconds in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and 800. Hoffius finished third in the 100 hurdles.)

In the field, Clay McElravy won the three throwing events (shot put – 42′-0″, discus 121′-0″ and javelin – 101′-9″), with Nate Kaltenbach bringing in close seconds. and Gavin Brinkley easily won the three jumping events (long jump – 19′-5.5″, triple jump – 40′-3″ and high jump -5′-3″) with Beau Verdill taking second in long, and high, and third in triple.

The girls took a hard loss with a score of 71 -79. We knew we were probably going to need to win the 4X800 relay to squeeze out a win and we tried it with an alternate but come up short.

We made  couple of moves on the track and won as many events as we could, with only nine ladies competing. We had Phylicia Hockman winning the 200 (30.0) and Wendy Beveridge win the 400 (1:09.5) which were different events for them. (Phylicia also won the 800 in 2:59.3 and finished second in the 3200, and Wendy won the 100 in 13.5 seconds.)

Bella Scott won the 1600, short of District time at 6:01.4 (and the 3200 in 14:30). (Gabriella Fleming completed the 3200 sweep, with a third.)

We were happy to see Rebekah Ketner increasing her competitiveness and qualifying for districts in the shot put with a throw of 31-9.5. (She also finished second in the discus. Paola Lopez finished second in the shot put and discus. Our jumpers performed well with Laken Lewis taking first in the long and triple jumps at 15′-11″ and 34′-0″ respectively and Wendy Beveridge right behind her. Laken also won the high jump (5′-0″) and pole vault (11″-0″).
