Clarion Cougars Win 2019 12-U Outlaw Shootout Baseball Tournament In Waterford (06/12/19)

Clarion Cougars entered 10 players into a small but very competitive 12-Under travel baseball tournament in Waterford, the Outlaw Shootout, on Saturday, June 8th and Sunday, June 9th. To be honest, I expected us to play our minimum 3 games and come home, having gained a little bit of baseball experience. This is the first time these 10 boys ever played together, as a team. Some played together last year, but over half are new faces that haven’t played competitive tourney ball.

On Saturday, all teams play 2 games to determine seeding for a single elimination tournament on Sunday. We started out with the French Creek Warriors, on Saturday and won 8-2. Lucas Mitrosky, Jimmy Kerr, and DK Smail combined to give up only 2 runs on 4 hits. Aiden Coulson had 3 singles and 3 RBIs. Nathan Frederick and Smail each added 2 hits. Wyatt Watterson also added a double.

In the second game, we jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but the Erie Outlaws had their hitting sticks and scored 18 runs in 2 innings to win 18-3 in a shortened game. Since we beat the Warriors and the Warriors beat Harbor Creek, we ended up 2nd seed.

On Sunday, we played the 3rd seed Warriors again. They pitched their top 3 pitchers this time but the outcome was the same, a 7-4 win over the Warriors to advance into the finals! Smail, Mitrosky, and Logan Lutz combined to give up 4 runs on eight hits. Smail had a double, home run, and 3 RBIs. Brady Pierce added two hits.

Harbor Creek defeated the Outlaws on the other side of the bracket. Their powerful line up was averaging 14 runs per game but Smail, Kerr, and Lutz did a great job of keeping their team off-balance the whole game, by giving up only 4 runs on only 5 hits in our 6-4 victory. Lutz came up big with a 3 run shot in the 4th. Mitrosky and Kerr both had two hits. Also adding singles were Smail, Coulson, and Weber.

This was truly a team effort. All ten players made contributions throughout the weekend! Every game we had different heroes that came through in a big way! Congrats Clarion!
