The newly formed Clarion Central Wildcats Football Team, a co-op with Clarion, North Clarion and Clarion-Limestone, will reveal their new logo this coming Friday. The logo is designed by Clarion Area alumnus Karl Jacobson.

The program will also feature historian Ken Burkett who will give a history presentation on the team’s namesake “Wildcats,” the Clarion – Jefferson County 105th Infantry Division of the Union Army in the Civil War.

Clarion Area Superintendent Dr. Joe Carrico issued this invitation today:

Good afternoon, this is Joe Carrico.  I wanted to invite you to attend the new logo and historical presentation scheduled for this coming Friday, July 3rd. The event will be held inside at the Clarion Mall.  We are excited to partner with the Clarion Chamber to offer this program as a part of the I Love Clarion festivities.

The Wildcat mascot is representative of the 105th infantry regiment that fought in various engagements during the Civil War.  Many of the soldiers were from our local communities.

Mr. Ken Burkett, a local resident who is also a leading expert in this field, will be conducting the presentation.  He will have artifacts from his collection on display.  His informational talk will last approximately 45 minutes.

The artifacts will be on display from 5:00 – 6:00PM.  There will be two presentations 6:00 – 6:45 and 7:15 – 8:00.  We will reveal and discuss the historical significance of the logo at the end of each presentation.  Seating is limited to 200 people per presentation and it will be on a first come, first served basis.

Please visit the Chamber’s website for details on the food, music and fireworks.  We hope you can join us!

(Below are quotes from Dr. Carrico and Wildcats’ and former Bobcats’ Head Coach Larry Wiser from an earlier article)

“We rescheduled the event to coincide with the “I Love Clarion” festivities. Ken Burkett is lending his considerable knowledge to our community, so we can celebrate the new team, logo and mascot. As originally discussed by the committee. We didn’t want any of the schools ‘losing’ their identity, but rather all three schools creating a new one together!

“We want to stress the historical relevance of why the Wildcats were chosen and we want to use the celebration as a way to launch this journey. The logo is unique to our teams. Ken helped us build a logo with a story that can and should be told time and again. Karl lent his artistic gift to the creation as well.  We will also be trying to plan some stuff for the upcoming season.  Pretty impressive!”

Wildcats’ coach and former Clarion Area history teacher, Larry Wiser, himself a Civil War history buff said, “I’m really fascinated and am glad we went this route.” He mentioned that the name and logo are natural fit, considering that the Wildcats Regiment consisted of soldiers mainly from Clarion and Jefferson Counties the same counties the players hail from.

He said, the choice of mascot is not to glorify war, but shows how the brave men in the 105th Wildcat Division came together for the common good. Coach Wiser feels anyone who is interested in Civil War history, would enjoy and benefit from this presentation.

(So mark your calendars for this Friday, July 3rd at 5:00 p.m. A New Era Begins! Go Wildcats!)
