Clarion Area freshman golfer Kameron Kerle will advance to the PIAA Class AA State Golf Tournament, after finishing in the Top 6 in the District Nine Class AA Tournament, on Saturday, October 4th, at Pennhills Club in Bradford. The State Tournament will be held on Monday, October 18th at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.

Kameron finished third, carding a 162 in the two-day district event. He shot an 82 on Monday (September 27th), as the Bobcats claimed the District Nine team championship. He bettered his score by two strokes on Saturday carding an 80.

Also advancing are Moniteau’s Jacob Felsing, the medalist with a 154; Kane’s Curt Barner, who finished second with a 156, Coudersport’s Brady Streich, who finished fourth with a 167; Forest Area’s Ethan Carl, who finished fifth, also with a 167; and St. Marys’ Lucas Benjamin, who finished sixth, with another 167.

There were two golfers who advanced in Class-AAA, Spencer Cornelius, who shot a 146 and Jake Franz, who carded a 145, both from Bradford. They will play Heritage Hills on Tuesday, October 19th.

Also finishing with a 167 was Clarion Area sophomore Devon Lauer (83, 84), narrowly missed the trip to states. The four golfers had a playoff.

Clarion Area assistant coach Jackie Kerle had this to say about the playoff, “Devon’s round of 83 put him finishing in a four way tie for the 4th, 5th and 6th spots, which resulted in a four man playoff.

“The playoff started on hole 1 with Devon Lauer,, Ethan Carll, Brady Streich and Lucas Benjamin. Brady won the first hole with a birdie. On the 2nd hole, Ethan made par to win the hole. On to the 3rd playoff hole for the final spot to advance, Lucas and Devon both reached the green on their third shot and Lucas made a 30 foot putt to win the hole.

“This was a heartbreaker for our team. Devon has put so much time into practicing and his short game is typically one of his strengths. He just couldn’t catch a break and get a putt to fall.”

The Bobcats had another golfer participate in the second day of Districts, another freshman, Lucas Mitrosky, who shot a 92 on Monday and a 96 on Saturday, for a 188. Coach Kerle said, “Lucas didn’t have his best round, Saturday, but throughout this whole season our team has gained a tremendous amount of experience and they all know what to expect for next season. As a team we all still stand a good chance of making it to the state tournament.

“The weather was perfect and the wind was as calm as we have ever experienced at Penn Hills. Kameron, Devon and Lucas should be extremely proud of making it to the second round of district play.”

The Bobcats, who won the District Nine Class-AA Championship, on Monday will compete on Thursday (October 7th) for the opportunity to advance to the State Tournament. Coach Kerle said, “As a team we all still stand a good chance of making it to the state tournament. We play as a team against Union City, at Treasure Lake Silver Course in DuBois. Whoever wins that match will advance to states as a team. Our team for Thursday consists of Kameron, Devon, McKayla Kerle, Owen and Lucas.”
