Roundup: Softball – Bobcats Take Two From Berries, Fall to Cardinals; Baseball – Bobcats Sweep Berries

The Clarion Area Softball and Baseball Teams played double-headers with Cranberry on Friday (April 22nd), with both Clarion squads coming away with sweeps. The Softball Team fell to DuBois Central Catholic on Saturday (April 23rd), in their third game over two days.

Softball

The Bobcats downed the Berries 12-7 in the opener at Paul A. Weaver Park.

The Cats, who were the visitors in this contest, scored one in the first, five in the second and three in the third, while holding the Berries of the board. Neither team scored in the fourth and fifth innings. Clarion plated three runs in the top of the sixth and the Berries answered with five in the bottom of the inning, sending the game to the seventh with Clarion leading 12-5. Cranberry closed out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to set the final.

Payton Simko had a homerun and a double for the Bobcats, with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Jordan Best homered as well. She also singled and scored two runs. Noel Anthony had a pair of hits, including a double and scored two runs.

Alexa Kitchen singled, drove in two runs and scored once. Emily Troese singled, scored twice and drove in a run. Kylee Beers singled and doubled. Bri Forrest doubled and crossed the plate twice. Mackenzie Aaron and Hadley Campbell each singled and drove in a run, with J.J. Wilson scoring once.

Anthony went the distance in the circle for the win.

The Cats had a 4-3 win in the nightcap, that was called due to darkness after five innings.

The Bobcats were the home team in this one.

Cranberry opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second, with Clarion answering with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Cats moved their lead to 3-1 with a run in the third. Neither team scored in the fourth.

Cranberry tied the score at 3-all with a pair of runs in their half of the fifth. But a solo homer by Beers gave the Bobcats the 4-3 win as darkness set in.

In addition to the four bagger, Beers had a single. Forrest had a double, a run scored and an RBI for the Cats. Campbell and Ally Burford each singled. Troese scored a run and Aaron had an RBI.

Anthony went all five innings to pick up the win.

Clarion fell to DuBois Central Catholic 21-2 (in three innings) in their game at Heindl Field.

The Cardinals opened with three runs in the top of the first. The Bobcats answered with two in the bottom of the inning. But DCC scored twelve runs in the second and another six in the third, while holding Clarion off the scoreboard for the win.

Beers doubled and drove in two runs for the Cats. Best singled and doubled and Anthony singled and scored a run.

Clarion is scheduled to travel to Redbank Valley on Monday (April 25th).

Baseball

Clarion was the visiting team in the first game with Cranberry, at Clarion County Park and came away with a 13-9 win.

The Cats scored a run in the top of the first, two more in the third and three in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. The Berries closed the gap to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. A 3-1 Bobcat edge in the fifth, had Clarion up 9-4. Clarion scored another run in the sixth, but Cranberry answered with six runs in their half of the inning, to trail by just one run,10-9. But the Cats scored three more in the top of the seventh and held the Berries of the board in the bottom of the inning to set the final.

Dawson Smail singled and doubled for the Bobcats, while scoring three runs and driving in two. Cam Lapinto had a single and double, two runs scored and an RBI. Ryan Alston singled three times, scored twice and drove in a run.

Derek Smail had a single, a double and three RBIs. Noah Harrison singled twice and drove in a pair of runs. Tanner Miller singled and scored twice. Brice Brinkley had a hit and scored a run. Dauntae Girvan scored a run and Devon Lauer had an RBI.

Alston was the winning pitcher.

The Cats were the home team in the second game and came away with a 15-5 win in six innings.

Cranberry scored a run in the top of the first, but the Cats closed out the inning with four runs for a 4-1 lead. Neither team scored in the second. Clarion plated two runs in the third for a 6-1 lead. Cranberry closed the gap to 6-5 with runs in the fourth and fifth inning.

But the Cats pushed five across the plate in their half of the fifth and another four in the sixth for the win.

Lapinto had 3 hits, two runs scored and two RBIs for Clarion. Dawson Smail had a pair of singles, drove in a run and scored three times.

Lauer had a pair of singles and scored three runs. Alston singled and scored a run.

Gary Matus recorded the win.

The Bobcats are scheduled to play Moniteau at Pullman Park on Tuesday (April 26th).
