Basketball: Bobcat Boys And Girls Both Victorious Against Union
The Clarion Area Boys and Girls basketball teams were both in action against Union on Friday night (December 9th). Both Bobcats squads came away with wins, with Boys winning their matchup at Union, 70-57 and the Girls taking their game at home, 39-22.
Boys Game: Clarion 70 – Union 57
Derek Lauer led the Bobcats, in scoring, with 24 points, including three treys. Dawson Smail followed with 21 points. He also had 9 rebounds, 6 steals and five assists.
Gabe Simko and Bryce Brinkley and Gabe Simko had 8 points each. Brinkley also had four steals. Derek Smail scored 5 points and pulled down seven boards.
Owen Kriebel and Logan MacKinlay had two points apiece.
The game was tied 14-all after one, but the Bobcats outscored the Knights 30-12 in the second to hold a 44-26 halftime lead. With a 21-17 Union edge in the third period, the score sat at Clarion 61-Union 47 heading to the fourth. Union recorded a 10-9 advantage in the fourth.
Payton Johnston and Zander Laughlin had 18 and 14 points respectively for Union.
Girls Game: Clarion 39 – Union 22
Sophie Babington and Taylor Alston led the scoring for the Cats, with 14 apiece. Babington had a three-pointer and gathered in seven rebounds.
Gia Babington had 4 points and three steals. Natalie Durish scored three points and pulled down eight rebounds. Alivia Diehl scored 3 points, to go along with four rebounds. Marley Kline sank a free throw.
Hailey Theuret led Union with 7 points, including one from long range.
Union led 10-8 after one and with an 11-9 Clarion edge in the second, the score was knotted at 19-all at the half. With a 10-0 Clarion edge in the third, the Bobcats led 28-19 heading to the final stanza. An 11-3 Clarion edge in the fourth, set the final.
