Clarion Bobcats And North Clarion Wolves Join Forces In Dig Pink Volleyball Breast Cancer Awareness And Fundraising Event

The Clarion Area Bobcats and North Clarion Wolves joined together to host the Dig Pink Volleyball – Breast Cancer Awareness and Fundraising Ceremony, which benefits the Patient Care Fund of the Clarion Hospital Foundation, on Thursday, October 5th, at the Clarion Area Gymnasium. The Ceremony took place between the The Junior Varsity and Varsity matches.

The Patient Care Fund is within the Clarion Hospital Foundation and the monies can be designated toward specific things. But all the proceeds from the Dig Pink event goes to help cancer patients.

The Patient Care Fund helps in many ways to provide to patients in many ways, to help to lighten the burden of the financial constraints that may occur due to having cancer.

Just a few of the things the funds supply may include wigs, which often are for women who have breast cancer that need chemotherapy, gas cards, for people that can’t work and we’ll help pay their utility bills.

Both teams as well as many others in the stands donned Dig Pink tee shirts or sweatshirts and/or wore pink ribbons for the Ceremony. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and pink ribbons are the symbol for Breast Cancer awareness.

The teams joined for group photos, a wonderful visual of the support there is in the area, for those who have overcome this disease and those fighting it.

Then the players from both teams were given pink carnations as those who have conquered the disease and those fighting the battle against it were asked to stand.

The pink carnation is a symbol showing the recipient, that they are seen and cared for, which can be very positive thing for the patients and their families. The team members then gave them to those who stood to be recognized.

This is a very significant heartwarming part of the program.

Just one example of what this fine event means: Stephanie Brinkley, whose mother, Gwen Rhoades who has been a survivor for many years, said, “It’s always a special night when my kids get to recognize my mom and her twenty-nine years of surviving breast cancer. She has been able to share this with all of them over the years at volleyball and basketball games.”

The donation for the Patient Care Fund were made possible by the proceeds from the various things: a basket raffle, 50/50 drawing, shirt sales and more.

Stephanie, who coordinates the event, mentioned reported that approximately $1,280 was raised for the Patient Care Fund, but that is prior to the tee shirt sale total.

Whenever I’ve talked to Stephanie about the event she is always quick to praise the many others who help with this event. Without volunteers, none of this would be possible.
