Bobcats Down Cardinals In D9 Class A Boys Quarterfinal Playoff Action

The homestanding Clarion Area Bobcats employed a big inside game, a number of fast break buckets, courtesy of strong defensive play and no letdown, as they defeated the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals, 69-45, in their District Nine Class-A Boys Basketball quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday (February 21st).

Clarion held a 15-12 lead after the first period. Dawson Smail led the way with eight points in the frame. Seven Bobcats spread the scoring in the second, as seven players dented the scoreboard, with none scoring more than two points, in a 13-9 Clarion advantage, sending the game to halftime with the Bobcats up 28-21.

Six Bobcats scored in the third, led by Dawson Smail’s 7 points and Tanner Miller’s six points, as a 25-15 Clarion edge opened the things up and sent the game into the final stanza at Clarion 53 – DCC 36.

A 16-9 Bobcat edge in the fourth set the final. Six Cats scored in the period.

Dawson Smail led the Bobcats scoring with seventeen. points, including two buckets from downtown. Miller followed with thirteen, including two treys.

Two other Cats finished with double-figures, with Devon Lauer hitting for 12 points and Derek Smail adding ten.

Gabe Simko had 6 points with Kameron Merrell and Bryce Brinkley scoring four points each. Dauntae Girvan contributed 2 points and Owen Kriebel scored one.

DuBois Central Catholic was led by Andrew Green, who had a very impressive all-round game. Green had a game-high nineteen points. Also scoring in double-figures for the Cardinals was Marek Hoyt, who finished with ten points. Hoyt had two treys and Green had one.

The number 3 seeded Bobcats will now face number 2 seeded Johnsonburg, in the semifinals, next Tuesday (February 27th) at St. Marys High School. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. The Rams advanced by defeating number 7 seed Northern Potter 66-34, in their quarterfinal clash.
