Five Wildcats Place At D9 Wrestling League Championships

The Central Clarion Wildcats participated in the District 9 Wrestling League Championships at St. Marys High School, on Saturday, January 4th.

Led by Mason Gourley’s championship at 172, Central Clarion had five place winners.

Jake Henry and Hayden Hindman both finished third at 189 and 285 respectively.

Gathering fourth place finishes were Grayson Aaron at 133 and Logan Powell at 139.

Mason finished the day at 4-0. He won by a 17-2 technical fall at 1:32, over Derick Pinge of Brockway. Mason followed that with a pin, at 1:32, over Deryk DeLong from Cranberry.

He got another pin in the semifinals, downing Redbank Valley’s John Morris in 1:06. His championship win came with another technical fall, downing Ridgway’s Benji Truchan 18-1 in 3:42.

Jake recorded a 4-1 record. He pinned Ashden Bearfield from Brockway in 2:38, in the opening round. He followed that with an 8-6 decision over Grant Jin from St. Mary’s, in the quarterfinals.

Jake dropped an 11-1 major decision to eventual champion Easton Belfiore from Brookville, in the semifinals. He bounced back with two straight wins by fall. He pinned Punxsutawney’s Jayden Rutan at 0:27, in the consolation semis and won the third place match at 4:34 over Grant Jin of St. Marys.

Hayden also finished 4-1, with all his wins coming by fall.

He pinned Nathaniel Clark from DuBois in 1:47, in the opening round and followed that with a fall over Punxsutawney’s Logan Baun at 1:21 of their quarter final bout.

Hayden’s only loss came by fall in the semifinals, losing to Jon Winnings from Brockway at 3:05.

Coming back from the loss, Hayden pinned DuBois’ Nathaniel Clark in 1:00 of the consolation semi finals. He finished the day by downing Jason Gardner of DuBois in 2:36 of the third place match.

Grayson’s day started in the quarterfinals, as he won by a 17-1 technical fall in 4:16 over Gage Singer from Johnsonburg. He fell by a one point 5-4 decision in the semifinals to Ridgway’s Nathan Steger.

The consolation semis saw Grayson winning by a 19-1 technical fall, in 3:44, over Joe Guzman from Johnsonburg.

Grayson dropped a 4-0 decision to Brookville’s Blake Porter in the third place match.

Logan also started his day in the quarterfinals. He pinned Ridgway’s Owen Steger in 2:39. This was Logan’s 100th career win.

He fell in the semis by a 10-0 major decision in the semifinals to St. Marys’ Cullen Catalone. Logan came back in the consolation semifinals with a 14-3 major decision over Colton Ross from Brockway, before falling by a 4-1 decision to Jordan Rutan from Punxsutawney in their third place match.

Also competing for the Wildcats were: Payton Hinton (101), Jackson Mravintz (121), Wyatt Aaron (127), Rea Eisenmen (127), Kullen Buzza (139), James Sprague (145), Caleb Hunter (152), Jeremiah Queenan (160), Ben Naser (160) and Gavin Hannold (215).

Wildcats’ coach Braun Gourley said, “All of our wrestlers got some matches which was the goal for the day.”
