SFU’s Korrin Burns Named NEC Women’s Volleyball Player Of The Week For Second Week In A Row; Two Other Red Flash Teammates Also Honored

The Northeast Conference, an NCAA Division I conference, announced their Women’s Volleyball Awards for Week #2, on Tuesday, September 9th.

Former Clarion Area Bobcat All-Stater and current St. Francis University Red Flash athlete, Korrin Burns, a senior Outside-Hitter, has been awarded the top award, being selected NEC/Molten Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week. This is the second straight week Korrin has won the award, her sixth time overall, as she was named Player of the Week twice in each of the two previous seasons as well. Her six career Player of the Year award sets the Saint Francis record, surpassing the mark held by Megan Taliaferro since 1997.

Korrin’s Red Flash teammate, freshman Right-Side Hitter, Gwen Atkins was selected NEC/Molten Women’s Volleyball Rookie of the Week. New Haven’s Payton Malinowski a Libero/Defensive Specialist was named NEC/Molten Defensive Player of the Week.

Korrin was also named an NEC Prime Performer. Joining her on the Prime Performer list is junior Setter, Alexandra Sappia.

Saint Francis had a 2-1 record as the host of the Altoona Grand Red Flash Classic held at DeGol Arena, on Friday and Saturday, September 5th and 6th.

Korrin 5.31 kills per set and 5.92 points per set. She had 69 kills in the tournament, 28 digs, 6 service aces and four blocks.

In the the Red Flash’s opening match against the Siena Saints, on Friday, a 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 25-16, 22-25, 15-7) win, Korrin registered 30 kills, the most ever by a Saint Francis player at home, in school history. She had a double-double with eleven digs, while also recorded 6 service aces and four blocks.

Saint Francis fell to the Youngstown State Penguins 3-0 (20-25, 22-25, 22-25) in their early match on Saturday.

Korrin had another double-double in a 3-2 (26-24, 21,25, 13-25, 25-20, 15-12) win over the LaFayette College Leopards, in the tournament’s final contest, with 24 kills and 12 digs.

She is the NEC’s only player with 100-or-more kills so far this season, is the nation’s current leader in kills per set (5.5) and points per set (5.98). Korrin is currently in second place among NEC attackers that have 75-or-more kills.

Gwen compiled a career-high 12 kills against Siena. She also had 3 service aces, 8 digs and two blocks.

Gwen has a .267 hitting percentage, 2.42 points per set, 2.15 digs per set and 1.85 kills per set, 0.38 blocks per set and 0.38 blocks per set.

Alexandra has a conference leading 10.85 assists per set. She had 55 assists against Siena and fifty-three against LaFayette.

Alexandra has passed the 1,500 career assist mark.
