Matt Buchanan, a former Clarion Sports Zone and Clarion Bobcat Football spotter and statistician has begun a new venture, covering college sports.
Matt and I became aquainted while working together at Universal Forest Products in Parker. Matt was a Crew Leader at the time. He is currently a Floor Supervisor. He has been employed there since October 2002, the same year he graduated from high school.
It wasn’t hard to see his absolute passion for sports, so one day I asked if he’d like to spot for me. He excitedly jumped at the opportunity.

Matt had his wife Tina tag along, which was a major plus.
Matt gives some background. “I started by spotting for Dave McClaine for ClarionSportsZone.com while he was filming for Clarion Bobcats. While doing this, it opened the door for me to keep stats for Clarion in the 2016 season thru MaxPreps.
“My wife, Tina also assisted with photography for the Clarion Bobcat games. I performed interviews with different players at halftime and after the game.”
Matt shared, “I’ve always had an interest in sports even as a young child, playing backyard ball with friends and family. Along the way, I have met many people involved in sports one way or another. Recently I’ve had call on my life to talk College Sports, so I decided to invest in some equipment to start a Podcast related solely to the subject.”
Wanting to spread his wings, Matt asked if he could do a special interview with a former area sports standout, who went on to play college football and write an article on it. It is an article that would be of great help to high school athletes today.
Matt explains, “During that time, I interviewed Bobby Telez, Keystone alumnus, and wide receiver for the Keystone Panthers. The article is about choosing your college and steps to take on what to expect on how to move forward when going to college. This article can be found on Clarion Sports Zone.”
That article, which is linked at the bottom of this article, also gives an idea of Matt’s fine interviewing and writing skills.
Back to the podcast: “I aired my first episode on September 13th. I have done 4 episodes since then and you can find them under “Hear me Out” on Audio.com. Come check it out!
“My dream job would be working for ESPN or something related to that.” And after listening to a couple of Matt’s podcasts, I believe he could fit right in.
Matt, a Keystone alumnus, said, “I started my sports journey at Keystone High School playing Football for a season in 9th grade and Baseball from 10th-12th grade.” He and Tina, a Union alumna, have lived in Saint Petersburg since December 15th, 2011 with their two children.

“I met my darling wife, Tina on April 29, 2000. She has been my supporter through my whole sports journey.

“We I have two beautiful children, Jason and Jade. Jason, age 14, is in 9th grade and Jade, age 13, is in 7th grade.”
Matt has a couple of special

Among his hobbies, Matt lists Legos, Star Wars, Football, and Video Games.
He shared some appreciation.
“I would like to Thank: Dave McClaine and Coach Larry Wiser and some key assistants on Clarion staff; Chris Rossetti from D9 Sports; Ed Brannon from The Derrick, who had me spot for them a few times.
“I’m sure I missed some people, which was not intentional, but thank you all for the journey we’ve been on.”
“A Friend once told me: ‘Act like you belong there, until they make you leave.’ That’s what I plan on doing on this endeavor.”
