Lady Cats And Bobcats Split With Union (12/25/14)

The Clarion Area Girls an Boys Basketball Teams hosted Union on Monday (December 22) night. The Lady Cats Varsity came away with a close 51-49, victory in the opener, while the Bobcat Boys fell 57-47, in the nightcap.

The Damsels broke out to an 8-0 lead in the first, but a Nicki Glenn three-point buzzer beater put the Lady Cats just five points down, at 15-10 as the period ended. Clarion outscored Union 15-6, in the second, to take a 25-21 lead into halftime, with the last points in the stanza coming on a bucket by Alexis Constantino with just 5 seconds left.

After a 16-13 Union advantage, in the third, Clarion entered the fourth with a one point, 38-37 lead.

The game was still very much up in the air with under a minute to go. With 36.5 seconds on the clock and the Damsels holding a 47-46 lead, Maci Thornton hit a jumper and was fouled in the process. She stepped to the line and drained the free throw to put Clarion on top 49-47. Union’s Lexey Shick scored on a jumper to knot the score at 49-all.

But Thornton was fouled at 19.0 seconds and sank both shots to seal the 51-49 win for Clarion.

Thornton and Shick each collected 25 points. Glenn had 8 points and Anna Reed added seven, for the Lady Cats.

The Bobcat Boys carried a three point, 24-21 lead into halftime. bBut the Golden Knights came back in the second half, outscoring Clarion 36-23, to pull away with the ten point win.

Zach Hill led the Bobcats with 15 points followed by Taylor Smith with thirteen. Thomas Plummer had 19 rebounds. Cole Morris had 21 points for Union.

The Lady Cats will be in the Kane Tournament on Friday and Saturday (December 26-27).

The Bobcat JV Teams had opposite results from the varsity, with the Bobcats winning their  contest 45-23 and the Lady Cats dropping a 49-31 decision.

Ceventh Lynch-Skunda led the Bobcats with 13 points followed by Luke Nellis who had eight. Christian Smith had 6 points, while Ryan and Reed Anthony each added five. Ty Burford scored 4 points, with Victor Stahlman and Tom Hearst each contributing two.

The Lady Cat JV stats weren’t available at the time of posting.
