Basketball Round-up Bobcats, Lady Cats Both 2-0 This Week (02/01/19)

The Clarion Area Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Teams each had a good week, by going 2-0.

The Bobcat Boys defeated homestanding Venango Catholic 65-52 on Tuesday (January 29th) and visiting Cranberry 66-37 on Friday (February 1st). The Lady Cats were on the road for both games, downing Union 48-22 on Monday (January 28th) and Cranberry 48-45, in overtime, on Friday.

Boys: Cal German led the Cats with 35 points and Nick Frederick followed with fifteen, against Venango Catholic.

Clarion led 16-10 after one and 28-25 at the halftime. The Vikings were within one at 43-42 after three, but a 22-10 fourth quarter run gave the Cats the win going away.

Ben Gillespie and Andrew Burda each had 19 points for V-C.

The Bobcats were down by two, 15-13 after one against Cranberry, but had a 20-12 edge in the second, to head in to halftime with a 33-27 lead. A 19-8 third period edge had Clarion up 52-35 going into the fourth where they outscored the Berries 14-2 to set the final at 66-37.

Four Cats scored in double figures led by German’s nineteen. Jake Burns and Nick Frederick each scored 12 and Gavin Brinkley followed with ten.

Preston Forest and Cam Russell had 12 and 11 respectively for the Berries.

The 9-8 Bobcats will travel to Karns City on Monday (February 4th).

Girls: Kait Constantino led the Lady Cats against Union, with fifteen points. Wendy Beveridge scored 9, with K. K. Girvan and Jordan Best each added eight in the 48-22 win.

Dominika Logue led the Damsels with seven.

Constantino was also the leading scorer for the Lady Cats against the Berries, netting 16 points, while going 6-6 at the line. Best was also in double-figures, with twelve. Girvan and Beveridge followed with eight apiece.

Clarion led 14-11 after one, 26-21 at the half and 33-29 after three. But a 10-6 Lady Berries advantage in the fourth, sent the game into overtime at 39-all. A 9-6 edge by the Cats in overtime sealed the win.

The 12-6 Lady Cats will travel to North Clarion on Tuesday (February 5th).
