Logan Powell, Mason Gourley Place Second At District Nine Class AA Wrestling Championships, Headed To Regionals, Bobcats Finish 8th

Clarion Area freshmen Logan Powell and Mason Gourley placed second at 106 and 145-pounds respectively, in the District Nine Class AA Wrestling Championships at Tippin Gymnasium on Saturday, February 26th. The two will now move on to the Northwest Regional Class AA Tournament, at Sharon High School this Friday and Saturday, March 4th and 5th.

Breckin Rex finished fifth at 160, with Caleb Edmonds at 189, Logan Edmonds at 215 and Josh Beal at 285 all finishing in sixth.

The Bobcats finished eighth out of fourteen in the Team Standings.

Brookville won the title. The rest of the Top Five included Brockway in second, Port Allegany in third, Cranberry in fourth and Curwensville in fifth.

Brookville’s Owen Reinsel (132) was name Outstanding Wrestler. This is his fourth straight District Nine Championship. Owen wrestled for Clarion Area in junior high. Brookville’s Dave Klepfer was named Coach of the Year.

Clarion Area Head Coach Lee Weber’s Summary:

106 Logan Powell 3rd seeded – Started out with a fall (1:50) over Chris Carroll of Brookville in the first period.  Then avenged one of his 2 losses in the semis by Major Decisioning 2nd seeded Damian Brady of Curwensville 18-5!  In the Finals, he lost 6-0 to 1st seeded Elijah Brosius (Cranberry) which was much closer than the last time they met. 

145 Mason Gourley – Mason came in as the 7th seed.  He defeated 2nd seeded Rayce Milliard of Johnsonburg 4-2, and 3rd seeded Brecken Cieleski (Brookville) (Dec 8-2). In the Finals, he fought hard but lost a close 6-1 decision to Kane’s 1st seeded Reece Bechakas.  

126 Seth Weckerly – Seth lost both of his matches by fall but showed vast improvements by dedicating more time to the sport.  

152 Ashton Rex – Ashton went 1-2 for the day but showed he can compete and win if he wrestles for 3 periods!  

160 Breckin Rex – Breckin went 3-2 for the day and gave great effort in all his matches.  

172 Caleb Edmonds – Caleb had a great day, taking down just about everyone with his fireman’s carry, but unfortunately got caught in a couple moves in scramble situations.  He was definitely skilled enough to advance to Regionals.  

215 Logan Edmonds – Logan is another one of our wrestlers that wrestled extremely hard!  He is a great example of hard work!  He took better wrestlers to their physical limits!

285 Josh Beal – Josh was disappointed he did not advance to Regionals, but I am never disappointed in his effort. Like many others on our team, Josh improved tremendously from last year to this season! Josh has two more years to attain his goals!

Both Logan Powell and Mason Gourley will advance to next week’s regional tournament in Sharon on Friday and Saturday.
