Former Clarion Area Bobcat Standout Brenna Campbell Along With Rest Of UMW Team Claims Coast To Coast Conference Volleyball Championship, Earn Bid To NCAA Division III Championships

Former Clarion Area Bobcat standout Brenna Campbell along with her University of Mary Washington teammates claimed the Coast to Coast (C2C) Athletic Conference’s 2022 Women’s Volleyball Championship in competition held Friday and Saturday, November 4th and 5th. The Eagles, from Fredericksburg, Virginia were the host for the event, held at the Ron Rosner Arena, in the William M. Anderson Center.

This is UMW’s third conference title, winning the others in 1991 and 1996. With the championship, the Eagles secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament’s sixty-four team field, with Regionals being played Thursday, November 10th through Saturday, November 12th.

The 24-7 Eagles learned that they will be hosting Colonial States Athletic Conference champion Cedar Crest, from Allentown in the opening round, when NCAA Division III aired their selection show on Monday afternoon, November 7th.

Saint Vincent College, in conjunction with SportsPITTSBURGH, will serve as the host for the Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Championship, which is set for Wednesday, November 16th through Saturday, November 19th at Duquesne University’s UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.

Mary Washington, the number two seed along with number one seed University of California, Santa Cruz each received quarterfinal byes in the C2C Tournament.

Quarterfinal action on Friday, saw fourth seed Salisbury (Maryland) University defeat number five seed Mount Mary University (Milwaukee) 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-7), with number three seed Christopher Newport (Newport News) University downing number six seed Pratt Institute (Brooklyn) 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-13).

In Friday’s semifinal action, Salisbury defeated UC Sant Cruz 3-0 (29-27, 25-22, 26-24), followed by UMW claiming a 3-2 (23-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-23, 15-12) win over Christopher Newport.

Pratt defeated Mount Mary (26-24, 25-23, 15-25, 25-18) in the 5th place match on Saturday. The 3rd place match followed, with UC Santa Cruz downing Christopher Newport (23-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-21, 15-11).

The tournament finished with the championship match, with Mary Washington claiming the title in four sets, over Salisbury (25-18, 20-25, 25-16, 25-16).

In the semifinal against Christopher Newport, Brenna registered 19 assists, a service ace and three digs. She followed that with 18 assists, 2 service aces (including the one for match point) and ten digs, in the championship victory over Salisbury. Brenna’s assists and digs constituted a double-double.

I always wanted to play in the NCAA tournament and I never thought I would get the opportunity. I am very grateful to be able to play against the top teams in the country battling for a spot to go to the next round.

Being able to go to the University of Mary Washington and play for Coach Hinsey and my teammates is amazing! I love the school and the atmosphere around sports, everyone supports everyone and it was amazing to win the conference title.”
