Ashton Rex, Jase Ferguson And Ryan Hummell Named To 2022 PFN Coaches Select 1A All-State Team

The Pennsylvania Football News (PFN) announced their 2022 Coaches Select All-State Teams last week, with the 1A, 2A and 3A players announced on Thursday (December 29th) and 4A, 5A and 6A players announced on Friday (December 30th).

The District Nine Football League Region 1 and District Nine – 2A Champion Central Clarion Wildcats were well represented on the 2A Squad, with Ashton Rex and Jase Ferguson named to the First Team and Ryan Hummell selected to the Second Team.

Ashton was selected at Wide Receiver, Jase was given the nod as an Offensive Athlete and Ryan was named at Middle Linebacker.

Wildcats Head Coach Dave Eggleton had this to say about the trio, “I am very proud of these three young men. They all have worked extremely hard to earn these accolades.”

Ashton finished the season with 63 catches for 1556 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also carried the ball 8 times for 31 yards.

Coach Eggleton said, “Ashton had the best season statistically of any receiver in the state. His big play ability was second to no one this year.”

Jase completed 132 passes in 235 attempts, for 2,727 yards. He had 33 touchdown passes and only 15 interceptions. He also ran for 521 yards on 122 carries. He had 7 rushing touchdowns.

Coach Eggleton had this to say about his quarterback, “Jase was one the best dual threat quarterbacks in the state. As only a sophomore, he finished near the top in all passing statistics. He also showed tremendous poise leading our offense.”

Ryan led the Wildcats with 154 tackles, 26 solo. He had 15.5 tackles for loss and 10 hurries. Ryan also intercepted 4 passes, had a pass defense and a fumble recovery.

Coach Eggleton mentioned, “Ryan was the heart and soul of our defense. He seemed to always be around the ball. He was also a great leader for our team.”

Coach Eggleton closed by saying, “These three deserve to be honored with the best players in the state.”  

There were several other players from the area named to the 2022 PFN Coaches Select All-State Team.

Brookville’s Noah Peterson was named to the First Team on the 2A Squad at Cornerback. Tyler Albright was selected to the First Team in 1A at Slotback/Halfback. On the 3A Team which only had a First Team, were the Oil City’s Ethen Knox was named the 3A Player of the Year and was First Team at Running Back.

A pair of Redbank Valley players made the Second Team in 1A, Tate Minich at Slotback/Halfback and Long Snapper Carson Rupp.

Several other District Nine players were also selected. Clearfield’s Isaac Samsel was named to the First Team in 3A. Port Allegany’s Blaine Moses was selected to the First Team in 1A at Middle Linebacker, with teammates Noah Archer an Offensive Athlete and Miska Young a Defensive End, being selected to the Second Team. Brockway had two players selected to the 1A Second Team, Wide Receiver Alex Carlson and Offensive Guard Reese Yahner. St. Marys’ Logan Mosier was named as a Safety on the 3A Second Team.

Players of the Year include: 1A – Alex Erby, Steelton-Highspire; 2A – Braeden Wislowski, Southern Columbia; 3A – Ethen Knox, Oil City; 4A – Stone Saunders, Bishop McDevitt; 5A – Ryan Palmieri, Pine-Richland; 6A – Josiah Trotter, St. Joseph’s Prep.

Coaches of the Year include: 1A – Kim Niedbala, Union Area; 2A – Donta Green, Westinghouse; 3A – Matt Humbert, Bell Vernon; 4A – Jeff Weachter, Bishop McDevitt; 5A – Jon LeDonne, Pine-Richland; 6A – Calvin Everett, Harrisburg.
