Logan Powell Captures Championship At 138, As Wildcat Grapplers Place Fourth At 2024 Patrick J. Morales Memorial Tournament

The Central Clarion Wildcats Wrestling team placed fourth in twenty-one team field, at the Patrick J. Morales Memorial Tournament held at Falconer (New York) High School, on Friday, January 10th and Saturday, January 11th.

Corry was the Team Champion in the tournament, which included teams from throughout Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania.

Leading the way for Central Clarion was Logan Powell, who finished 4-0 in capturing the 138 pound championship. Also placing for the Wildcats were Mason Gourley who finished second at 170, Grayson Aaron and Jake Henry who finished third at 131 and 190 respectively and Hayden Hindman who finished fourth at 285.

Logan began his quest with a pin over Brody Krempa from Eden (NY) in Championship Round Two. He followed that with a win by injury default over Alfred Arnold from Hamburg (NY) in the Championship Quarterfinals.

The Championship Semifinals saw Logan Powell record an 18-0 technical fall over Brayden McCarthy from Falconer(NY). Logan closed out by pinning Nathan Warrior from Gowanda (NY) for the Championship.

Mason received byes to the Championship Quarterfinals, where he registered a 20-5 technical fall over Javonte Hackett from Falconer. In the Championship Semifinals Mason Gourley pinned Evan Braunscheidel from Hamburg. The Championship Finals saw Mason lose a close 4-2 decision to Corry’s Mason Savitz.

Grayson began with a 16-1 technical fall over Bradford’s Cooper McGee in Championship Round Two. He fell to Corry’s Marcus Meredith 9-2 in the Championship Quarterfinals.

Grayson came back reeling off four straight wins.

In Consolation Round Four, Grayson recorded a 23-5 technical fall over Mason Avenali of Kane. He followed with a 15-7 major decision over Eisenhower’s Ryan Chambers in Consolation Round Five. It was another major decision for Grayson, in the Consolation Semifinals, as he downed Luke Duffina of Medina (NY) 11-2. 

He ended his run with a 6-3 decision over Marcus Meredith from Corry in the Third Place Match.

Jake started his competition with a pin over Seneca’s Paul Spires in Championship Round Two. He fell by a 15-7 major decision to Medina’s Brody Fry in the Championship Quarterfinals.

Consolation Round Four had Jake pinning Gowanda’s Brody Mescall. He followed that in Consolation Round Five: with a fall over Bryceton Wilkins from Eisenhower. Jake picked up a 4-1 (sudden victory-1) decision in the Consolation Semifinals, over Landon Nickerson from Cory.

He closed out with a pin over Falconer’s Patrick Braley in the Third Place Match.

Hayden began in Championship Round Two, pinning Eliel Collazo from Dunkirk (NY). It was another pin for Hayden in the Championship Quarterfinals, as he defeated Hamburg’s Leo Haley.

He lost by fall to Mason Maring from Chautauqua Lake (NY) in the Championship Semifinals. Hayden came back with a win by fall over Collazo again in the Consolation Semifinals, before losing by fall to Corry’s Owen Nickerson in the Third Place Match.

Several other Wildcats scored points.

Dylan Albertine went 2-2 at 215, with his wins coming by pin. Gavin Hannold also wrestled at 215 and finished at 1-2, with his win coming by pin. James Sprague was 1-2 at 145, as he registered a fall for his win. Drew Crompton had win by decision at 116, finishing 1-2.

Also competing for the Wildcats were: Payton Hinton at 101, Jackson Mravintz at 124, Rea Eisenman at 124, Kullen Buzza at 145, Caleb Hunter at 152, Ben Naser at 152, Jeremiah Queenan at 160 and Marlon Lewis at 190.

Coach Gourley shared, “Overall the tournament was a success. We hoped to improve on out 4th place finish last year but ended up 4th again. All of our wrestlers got better the second day which was good to see.

We hope to continue to improve tomorrow as we host Brockway.
